The Woolworths Wally?
Martial arts teaches us discipline, control, and most importantly, the ability to resolve conflict without violence. A recent experience at Woolworths reinforced just how valuable these lessons are in real-life situations.
Confrontation At The Checkout
Bet and I had just finished a lot of work at our new Crows Nest dojo when we stopped by Woolworths for a few groceries. As we were checking out, we noticed a big commotion. A small female employee was asking a much larger man for his receipt as he attempted to leave with a bag full of items. Something felt off.
The man, visibly unstable, suddenly turned aggressive—yelling, pointing a finger in her face, and slowly advancing, trying to intimidate her. To her credit, despite the fact she looked nervous, she still tried to get the receipt. She took pride in her work and was not going to let someone get away with stealing.
Situational Awareness And Taking Control
When you train in martial arts, your instincts kick in immediately. I scanned the area—plenty of people around, some bigger than the aggressor, yet no one stepped in. It’s a reminder that courage is not about size—it is about action.
I quietly told Bet to stay put, keeping her safe, but I could not stand by while this smaller worker was being threatened. Without aggression, I stepped between them and reassured the worker, telling her to step away. The man, still yelling, was also noticeably larger than me, But I remained calm and standing firm. I made the decision to help this person, so I needed to be stoic with my actions.
The Power Of Calm In Conflict Resolution
Something interesting happens when aggression is met with composure. The man’s intimidation tactics did not work on me, and he knew it. I did not challenge him, did not escalate the situation—just held my ground, unwavering. His bluster continued for a moment before he realised he had no power here. Then, he walked away…without the stolen groceries.
No one got hurt. Nothing was stolen. The situation was resolved—without a single punch thrown and a lot of people seeing how a situation can be handled in a peaceful manner.
Leading By Example
As we continued checking out, Bet and I checked in on the worker, who was understandably shaken. She kept thanking us, saying she was just doing her job. That’s when I realised something funny—I was wearing my Quantum Martial Arts polo. I smiled, pointed to the logo, and said, “Well, self-defence and helping others is my job.” The lady seemed so relieved, and kept saying I was the right man at the right place.
And, I think we have created a sales monster at QMA. Just like that, Bet seamlessly transitioned into telling her about our new dojo opening nearby. The worker mentioned she had a three-year-old daughter, and we assured her we had classes for that age group. She appreciated the support and said we were great examples of martial artists helping others.
Choosing The Path Of Peace
So, who was the real “wally” here? Obviously, the man who tried to bully and steal. But perhaps I was a bit of one too—for blurting out my corny “self-defence and helping others” line! What a hero! I still cannot believe I said that ha ha.
If there is one lesson to take from this, it’s that martial arts is not about violence—it is about confidence, control, and choosing peace. If more people embraced these principles, we would see fewer conflicts, less aggression, and a world where doing the right thing comes naturally.
So hey, if people do the right thing…not shoplift… not try to bully and get aggressive towards others…choose the path of peace…then I will not be forced to come out with corny one-liners along the way.
